Sanford teen recovers after shark bite in New Smyrna Beach

A shark bit a teenager from Sanford on the calf while he waded in waist-deep water in New Smyrna Beach on Sunday night, according to a Volusia County Beach Safety spokesman.

Matthew Cornell, 19, sustained lacerations after the incident at about 7:45 p.m. near the Flagler Avenue beach approach, Capt. Andrew Ethridge said.

Beach personnel treated Cornell on the scene, but he drove himself to the hospital, Ethridge said.

The bite is the first in Volusia County for 2019, according to Ethridge.

No other information was released.
